Introduction to Kashihara
Located in the middle of Nara Prefecture, Kashihara City is said to be the birthplace of Japan as this was where the first Emperor of Japan, Jimmu, established the throne in 660 BC. The city is also home to the first full-fledged imperial capital city of Japan, Fujiwara-kyo (694-710). The site where the Fujiwara Palace once stood still attracts huge crowds every year when seasonal flowers bloom.

Together with neighbouring Asuka Village, various sites in Kashihara are registered on the UNESCO World Heritage Candidate List under “Asuka-Fujiwara: Archaeological Sites of Japan’s Ancient Capitals and Related Properties”. More recently, 15 locations in the city have been recognised as part of Japan Heritage by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, under the narrative “Dawn of Japan: Women in the Asuka Period”.
